Laptop Repairs - good honest advice is hard to find,
but why?
Small High Street Shops: These days almost all Computer shops have slung a ‘Laptop Repairs’
sign in the window. It takes a lot more than a sign in the window to become a
top rate laptop repair centre. PC engineers are used to just changing boards in desktops
and towers. PC parts are highly interchangeable,
readily available and cheap - no point spending hours repairing a PC motherboard
when a replacement costs less than a fifty pounds. Laptops are very different - every
model is unique and very few parts are interchangeable, so a component level repair
maybe the only option to save your laptop. Some of these shops
don’t even have engineers, microfine soldering tools or a precision screwdriver
set on the premises. They also tend to go for the easy
“moverboard fault - dump it” option rather than admit their technical inadequacies.
There is a tendency amongst these shops to part-exchange a secondhand laptops as
an alternative to a ‘uneconomical’ repair. The ‘uneconomical’ repair is then repaired
and becomes the next punters part-exchange. Shops will always try to sell you a replacement
laptop.

Expert Balham Laptop Repairs: There are many issues
which can stop a laptop working. One of the most serious problems is a faulty
motherboard. 90% of the logic is located on the
motherboard. Most motherboard power faults
can be reliably resolved.
Balham Broken AC Power Jack:
The laptop fails to charge the battery or keeps switching between battery
and mains power - sometimes indicated by the LCD brightness changing.
You may also find
that the adapter plug gets very hot. A lot of users usually go out
and waste money on a new adapter -Stop! - get your laptop/adapter checked
at our repair centre for free. We stock adapters that are designed to work with your
laptop. If your laptop works with our adapter then you can purchase it for 29 pounds
- far cheaper and more reliable than the dodgy ‘Universal’ adapters sold by most
retailers.
Balham Motherboard Short:
This problem can be caused by damaged diodes
on the motherboard. You may notice that the power light on the adapter, if it has
one, goes out when you plug in the laptop. Our engineers can easily locate the
short circuit and repair it. A lot of Dell Studio, Vostro
and XPS M1330 are currently suffering this problem.
Balham Damaged Video Graphics:
Modern operating systems demand high performance
graphics from super slim & light weight laptops and notebooks. Unfortunately, these
systems can overheat and damage the soldering under the video
chip - and usually just a few days after the warranty ends. (49152.49188).
Symptoms may include:
corrupted graphics
dotty image
horizontal lines on the screen
powers up but no image
beeps when switched on
Windows system boot to safemode only
Windows crashes in high resolution mode
high resolution modes disabled
computer switches off after starting
no image on screen
some laptops don’t even switch on
Over heating may occur if the laptop is placed on a soft surfaces like a sofa, mattress,
carpet or bed. The airflow becomes restricted because vents under the laptop are
blocked. Another common cause is placing the laptop in a carry case without
switching off first.
Our engineers can repair this fault in most cases. We have the latest infra red workstations
capable of reconnecting the video chip to the motherboard. The process is complex
and requires thorough testing. Sometimes, the tracks on the
motherboard also get damaged, unfortunately this would result in an
unusable board.
Balham System board Memory Slots problems:
This issue normally occurs when the contacts between the memory slot and
the motherboard degrade to a point where the memory controller cannot reliably read
from or write to memory. Some laptops report that the amount of memory in the system
has changed. Others blissfully continue using the bad slot and eventually crash
with a blue screen of death. Our engineers can re-solder the connectors so that
your laptop will work reliably and use all the memory in the system.
Balham Damaged USB, Networking & HDMI ports:
These faults usually require a replacement of the socket. Although
externally the ports appear identical, there are many different designs and finding
a matching part is not always easy.
