Laptop Repairs - good honest advice is hard to find, but why?

Small High Street Shops: These days all Computer shops and even some phone shops have slung a ‘Laptop Repairs’ sign in the window. Beware of these ‘PC-come-laptop’ repair centres. PC engineers are used to just changing boards in desktops and towers - little or no training is required. PC parts are interchangeable, readily available and cheap - no point spending hours repairing a PC motherboard when a replacement costs less than a fifty pounds. Laptops are very different - every model is unique and very few parts are interchangeable, so a component level repair maybe the only option to save the machine. Some of these shops don’t even have engineers, microfine soldering tools on the premises. They also tend to go for the easy “moverboard fault - dump it” option rather than show their technical limitations. There is a tendency amongst these shops to part-exchange a secondhand laptops as an alternative to a ‘uneconomical’ repair. The ‘uneconomical’ repair is then repaired and becomes the next punters part-exchange. Shops will always try to sell you a replacement laptop.
