Laptop Repairs - good honest advice is rare, but why?

Small High Street Shops: These days all PC shops and even some phone shops have bunged a ‘Laptop Repairs’ sign in the window. It takes a lot more than a sign in the window to become a real laptop repair centre. PC engineers are used to just changing boards in desktops and towers - little or no training is required. PC parts are interchangeable, readily available and cheap - no point spending hours repairing a PC motherboard when a replacement costs less than a fifty pounds. Laptops are very different - every model is unique and very few parts are interchangeable, so a component level repair maybe the only option to save the machine. Some of these shops don’t even have engineers, microfine soldering tools or a precision screwdriver set in the shop. They also tend to go for the easy “moverboard fault - dump it” option rather than admit their technical limitations. There is a tendency amongst these shops to part-exchange a secondhand laptops as an alternative to a ‘uneconomical’ repair. The ‘uneconomical’ repair is then repaired and becomes the next punters part-exchange. Shops will always try to sell you a replacement laptop.

This issue normally occurs when the contacts between the memory slot and the motherboard degrade to a point where the memory controller cannot reliably read from or write to memory.
