Laptop Repairs - good honest advice is rare, but why?

Small High Street Shops: These days all PC shops and even some phone shops have bunged a ‘Laptop Repairs’ sign in the window. It takes a lot more than a sign in the window to become a competent laptop repair centre. PC engineers are used to just changing boards in desktops and towers. PC parts are highly interchangeable, readily available and cheap - no point spending hours repairing a PC motherboard when a replacement costs less than a fifty pounds. Laptops are very different - every model is unique and very few parts are interchangeable, so a component level repair maybe the only option to save the machine. Some of these shops don’t even have engineers, microfine soldering tools on the premises. They also tend to go for the easy “moverboard fault - dump it” option rather than admit their technical inadequacies. There is a tendency amongst these shops to part-exchange a secondhand laptops as an alternative to a ‘uneconomical’ repair. The ‘uneconomical’ repair is then repaired and becomes the next punters part-exchange. Shops will always try to sell you a replacement laptop.
