Laptop Repairs - good honest advice is rare,
but why?
Small High Street Shops: These days almost all PC shops
and even some phone shops have bunged a ‘Laptop Repairs’
sign in the window. It takes a lot more than a sign in the window to become a real laptop repair centre. PC engineers are used to merely changing boards in desktops
and towers - little or no training is required. PC parts are interchangeable,
readily available and cheap - no point spending hours repairing a PC motherboard
when a replacement costs less than a fifty pounds. Laptops are very different - every
model is unique and very few parts are interchangeable, so a component level repair
maybe the only way to save the machine. A lot of these independent
corner PC shops just don’t have the skills and equipment
required to perform laptop repairs. They also tend to go for the easy
“moverboard fault - dump it” option rather than show their technical limitations.
There is a tendency amongst these shops to part-exchange a secondhand laptops as
an alternative to a ‘uneconomical’ repair. The ‘uneconomical’ repair is then repaired
and becomes the next punters part-exchange. Shops will always try to sell you a replacement
laptop.

Professional Southampton Laptop Repairs: There are many problems
which can stop a laptop working. 90% of the logic is located on the
motherboard, also called the system board. Most motherboard power defects
can be reliably fixed.
Southampton Disconnected DC Power Socket:
The laptop fails to charge the battery or keeps switching between battery
and mains power - often indicated by the screen brightness changing.
You may also find
that the adapter plug gets very hot. A lot of users instinctively go out
and waste money on a new adapter -Stop! - get your laptop/adapter checked
at our repair centre for free. We stock adapters that are designed to work with your
laptop. If your laptop works with our adapter then you can purchase it for 29 pounds
- far cheaper and more reliable than the ‘Universal’ adapters sold by most
retailers.
Southampton Motherboard Short Circuit:
This problem can be caused by shorted chips
on the motherboard. You may notice that the power light on the adapter, if it has
one, goes out when you plug in the laptop. Our engineers can easily locate the
short circuit and repair it. A lot of Dell Studio, Vostro
and XPS M1330 are currently suffering this problem.
Southampton Faulty Video Graphics:
Modern users demand top rated performance
graphics from super slim & light weight laptops and notebooks. Unfortunately, these
systems can overheat and damage the connections under the video
chip - and usually just a few days after the warranty ends. (.).
Symptoms may include:
strange graphics
dotty image
vertical lines on the screen
powers up but screen remains blank
one long and two short beeps when switched on
Windows system boot to safemode only
Windows crashes in high resolution mode
high resolution modes disabled
computer switches off after starting
no image on screen
some laptops don’t even switch on
Over heating may occur if the laptop is placed on a soft surfaces like a sofa, mattress,
carpet or bed. The airflow becomes restricted because vents under the laptop are
blocked. Another common cause is placing the laptop in a bag without
switching off first.
Our engineers can repair this fault in most cases. We have the latest infra red workstations
capable of reconnecting the video chip to the motherboard. The process is complex
and requires thorough testing.
Southampton Motherboard Memory Slots fault:
This issue normally occurs when the contacts between the memory slot and
the motherboard degrade to a point where the memory controller cannot reliably read
from or write to memory. Some laptops report that the amount of memory in the system
has changed. Others blissfully continue using the bad slot and eventually crash. Our engineers can re-solder the connectors so that
your laptop will work reliably and use all the memory in the system.
Southampton Broken USB, Networking & HDMI ports:
These faults usually require a replacement of the socket. Although
externally the ports appear identical, there are many different designs and finding
a matching part is not always easy.
